The scythe is the standard farmers harvesting tool going back for ages. It is very awkward to wield in combat but a formidable blade mounted on a long haft can do some serious damage regardless of its configuration. Not infrequently these would be bent or remounted in a more militarily useful configuration, made into something like a glaive (see Glaive).
