The tropes we have about history are so overpowering that they completely obscure history itself, especially in popular entertainment, even though the past is a lot more interesting and often, amusing, than our fake versions of it. For example, the notion that the ‘witch burnings’ were a medieval phenomenon and that they almost exclusively targeted women are two such cherished tropes, which are fine if you just want to find yet another mildly creative way to fight the culture wars. Historical literature is often how we talk about today’s problems as they say, and it’s comforting for many to think of the world in stark binary terms. But if you don’t know the reality, you could be vulnerable to someone (some man-witch) placing a deadly Fretrúnir (Fart rune!) on your ass!!!
