    So here is an example of combat using Codex rules, between two roughly equal guys with daggers. Just for one, one guy has a stiletto and the other guy has a cinquedea dagger. Both have a ‘jack of plates’ armor on their torso and no other armor.

    They roll initiative; Bob rolls a 17+4 (bonuses) =21. Dave rolls a 6+4 =10. Bob has initiative.

    Both have a “Martial Pool” of 4 dice. They start out at Onset range. Bob elects to make a one die piercing attack to start. Dave defends with one die as well. Bob rolls and 11 + 6 (mods, based on the onset range) = 17 and Dave rolls a 12 +6 for defense = 18 (edited)

    Bob elects to attempt a Feint. He expends 1 MP, using his intimidate skill. Rolls a 17+7=24. Dave uses his Sense Motive, rolling 12+3 =15. The Feint works. Because Bob rolled over 20, Dave loses 2 MP. Dave only has 3 MP so he is out.

    Bob thrusts again, this is his second attack in the round so now he is at “Melee” range. Bob gets a better bonus for his stiletto now. He rolls 19+10 (speed bonus) = 29. Dave is out of MP so only gets his passive defense (13) It’s a hit. Because it’s over 20, it counts as an ‘Artful Strike’ so extra damage.

    Damage is D4+2 plus an extra D6 for ‘Artful Strike’. Bob rolls a 2+2=4 and a 3, for a total of 7 damage. But Dave’s Jack of plates absorbs 5…. but the Stiletto has AP +4 so it negates all but 1 point of armor. So he does 6 damage. Still a relatively minor wound, but it’s first blood. (edited)

    Bob decides to grapple Dave, expending 1 MP. Dave gets an “Opportunity Attack” which triggers his Sidestep Martial Feat, this allows him to move out of reach.

    Bob then decides to make a 2 MP thrust. Dave decides to ‘void’ the attack (Actively defend but without using the weapon) also with two dice. Bob rolls a 2 and a 5, keeping the 5. Dave rolls a 9 and a 20.

    The ‘natural’ (unmodified) 20 on the die roll Means a ‘Critical Success’ on defense, which generates an automatic counterattack. (edited)

    Because Dave voided the previous thrust, he now uses his Nachreisen Martial Feat for his counterattack, gaining a Free Dice. He elects to cut, and to ‘Bypass’ Bob’s armor. Bob, now on the defensive, uses his last MP for Active Defense. (edited)

    Dave rolls a 19 and a 12. keeps the 19+ 8=27. -3 for the Bypass attempt (to avoid the arming jack) =24. Bob rolls a 7+4 (his defense bonus with the stiletto) = 11. Dave hits and because it’s over 20 it is an “Artful Strike”. (edited)

    Damage is D8+1, and a D10 (more damage due to cutting) for the “Artful Strike”. There is no effect from the armor because he did the Bypass. Dave rolls 4+1=5 and 3= for 8 damage. Both men now have moderate wounds. (edited)

    Bob elects to make a 2 MP attack, thrusting. Dave decides to defend with 1 MP, using his blade this time.

    Bob rolls 2 and 5, keeps the 5 (+10=15). Dave rolls an 11+6=17. Dave’s roll is higher so it is a Miss. (edited)

    Dave now uses his Counterstroke MF to interrupt Bob’s turn with a counterattack. He elects to use 2 MP to cut, attempting to Bypass. Bob defends with his last 2 MP. (edited)

    Dave rolls 5 and 18, keeping the 18+8=26. -3 for bypass =23. Bob rolls 2 and 14, keeping the 14+4=18. He is cut.

    Damage is D8+1+D10 for “Artful Strike” (cut). Rolls 6+1=7, and 4. 13 Damage. Bob has now taken 21 damage, he only has 23 so he’s down to 2. (edited)

    Bob rolls a “Battlefield Discipline” check to stay in the fight. DC is 21 (the amount of damage he took) he rolls a 3+6=9. he decides to run.

    Bob runs, expending 3 MP. Dave pursues, expending 2 MP (saving 1 to stab him if he catches him). Bob rolls 6 and 10+5 (Run skill mod)=15. Dave rolls 11+2=13. Bob escapes!
